Timket is the Ethiopian celebration of Epiphany, around January 17-20 of each year. People gather in outdoor spaces to sing and dance together. Melaku proclaims that Timket is where he learned how to dance - “Timket is my university.” Nowadays Melaku organizes a Timket procession that includes Fendika artists and friends, as well as special guest artists from different parts of Ethiopia. For the 2019 celebration, Melaku’s Timket featured an older women’s music group from Gamo, and a group from Dawro, the southern region of Ethiopia. This latter group plays an instrument called Dinka, arguably the longest instrument in the world. Melaku’s dream is to curate a full street festival during Timket that celebrate music and dance traditions from all corners of Ethiopia.
